Karwa Chauth jewellery ideas

4 min read,

For Karwa Chauth, most women build their jewellery around the traditional signs of a married woman, such as bangles, a mangalsutra, sindoor and often a maang tika, then add one festive statement piece for the evening puja. The best choices are comfortable enough for a long fasting day and sparkly enough to shine in dim moonrise light. Customs vary a lot between families and regions, so treat these as ideas, not rules.

What the day asks of your jewellery

Karwa Chauth is observed by many married women in North India, with a fast that traditionally runs from before sunrise until the moon is sighted. That makes it a long day. You may be cooking, getting ready, attending the evening katha with other women and then waiting on the terrace for the moon. Heavy earrings and tight chokers that feel fine for a two-hour wedding can become uncomfortable over many hours, especially when you are not eating or drinking.

Plan your look in two layers. Wear the lighter traditional pieces through the day, and add the heavier statement jewellery about an hour before the puja. This also keeps your best pieces fresh for the photographs.

Idea 1: the first Karwa Chauth

Many newlyweds wear their wedding lehenga or a bridal-style saree for the first Karwa Chauth, often in red or maroon. If that is your plan, re-use your bridal jewellery but edit it down. You do not need the full bridal stack. A choker or one long necklace, the maang tika, chooda or bangles and the nath if your family follows that custom is plenty.

If you did not keep bridal jewellery, a Polki-look or American Diamond set gives a similar bridal feel without the full weight. Pieces from our Heritage collection are designed for exactly these occasions. Look for a set with a matching maang tika so the forehead piece ties in with the necklace.

Idea 2: the classic red saree

A red or maroon silk saree with gold zari is the most traditional look in many families. Gold-tone Kundan works beautifully here. Choose a Kundan necklace with ruby-red or green stones, jhumkas or chandbalis, and gold-tone bangles mixed with red glass ones. Add a slim gold-tone waist chain if the saree is draped Nivi style.

Keep the blouse neckline in mind. A deep back blouse looks lovely with a long necklace; a high neck calls for skipping the necklace and wearing bigger earrings and a statement maang tika instead.

Idea 3: suit or lehenga, lighter look

A heavy anarkali suit or a light lehenga is common too. With a dupatta draped over the head for the puja, the neck and ears carry the look, while the maang tika peeks out from under the dupatta. A medium Kundan necklace set with earrings is usually enough. Long chandbalis look graceful with a head-covering dupatta because they frame the face.

Salwar suits in bright pink, orange or green are just as festive as red. With these, pick jewellery stones that contrast rather than match: green Kundan with a pink suit, or red stones with a mustard one. Keep the bangles in the suit colour so the hands and outfit look connected.

Idea 4: for working women

If Karwa Chauth falls on a working day and you are going to the office, wear pieces that pass for work in the morning and can be upgraded later. Kundan studs, a few bangles in your traditional colours, your mangalsutra and a slim watch work well. Carry a pair of chandbalis and a maang tika in your bag, and add them when you get home before the puja.

A simple way to make the switch feel special is to change your earrings and bindi only. Bigger earrings and a small maang tika transform an office look into a festive one in a couple of minutes, with no need to change the whole outfit.

Hands, mehendi and moonrise photos

Mehendi is a big part of the festival for many women. Do not wear rings or bracelets while it dries, and avoid putting on plated bangles until the paste has come off fully, because mehendi oil and lemon-sugar mix can dull the plating. A haathphool (hand harness) looks especially pretty over dark mehendi.

Moonrise photos are usually taken outdoors in low light. Stones with sparkle, like AD and Kundan, catch whatever light there is from the diya, phone flashlight or terrace bulbs. Matte oxidised jewellery tends to look flat in these photos, so save it for daytime looks.

After the festival, wipe all plated jewellery with a soft dry cloth to remove sweat and sindoor dust before storing it separately in zip pouches.
